Slow down, enjoy the drive: Law enforcement agencies partner to prevent aggressive driving

The City of Idaho City, IDAHO — The Idaho City Police Department and the Idaho Office of Highway Safety (OHS) urge Idahoans to slow down and enjoy the drive this summer. July 19 through August 11, law enforcement agencies across the state will be patrolling Idaho roads for aggressive drivers to help ensure everyone can travel to their destinations safely.

So far this summer, at least 41 people have died in crashes on Idaho roads, bringing the year-to-date total to 115 deaths.

“Speeding is illegal and puts you, your loved ones, and other people on the road at risk,” said Idaho City Police Chief Watson. “Speed limits are in place to protect you and create safer roads for everyone. So let’s slow down, have some patience behind the wheel, and enjoy the drive.”

Other aggressive driving behaviors include tailgating, failing to stop for red lights or stop signs, weaving in and out of traffic, and passing a vehicle on the wrong side of the road or on the shoulder.

OHS prepares an annual traffic crash report. It is a statistical analysis of all crashes that happen on Idaho roads each year. The full 2023 Idaho Traffic Crash Report is now available online.

The report shows that aggressive driving was a contributing factor in 50% of crashes and 103 people were killed in aggressive driving crashes on Idaho roadways last year. While 74% of all aggressive driving crashes occurred in urban areas, 61% of the fatal aggressive driving crashes occurred in rural areas. Drivers under the age of 25 represent more than one-third of the drivers involved in aggressive driving crashes.
